Your family can enjoy an ADU addition for many years. A nicely designed ADU can be as simple as turning your garage into an ADU (or better known as a JADU “Junior ADU“). There are other ways to build ADU’s on your property.

What types of ADUs are permitted in California?

  • Detached ADU | This is basically a new, small house. It is not attached to your home.
  • Attached ADU | Basically the same as attached, but easier to share common utilities. More for a family member, granny or kids.
  • JADU | This can be done by claiming a portion of your existing house, and modify it to be a separate little home with a kitchen, bath and living space.
  • Garage Conversion | YES, you can legally convert your garage now to build an ADU. This has been done illegally for years, but is now permitted.

One important thing to remember about deciding to build an ADU or not to is that the State of California made this law on Jan 1st 2000. There are many counties in CA that want to ban the ADU. If this happens in the future, and you have built an ADU, your Home Value Could Double. The average size ADU in LA County is about 750-800 sq. ft. and it can bring in about $3000.00 per month in rent or lease. Paul G.
